Well, this winter has been pretty slow for me photography wise and it looks like the spring and summer are not going to pick up much, at least at this time. So, I decided to send off one of my back up cameras to have it converted to full time infrared. I just recieved the camera back this week and I am as happy as a pig in slop. Very Happy

I am so excited about the posibility of shooting infrared that I wll be going to my favorite location tomorrow to do some serious experimenting. I am even going to try and shoot some infrared panoramas of Antietam just to see how it comes out.

I'll let you guys know how things turn out after the weekend. It's going to be fun to have this infrared capability in Rome next October. Talk about some very cool opportunities.

Is it possible to take ultra-violet shots yet Jeff?

Donnalee, Infrared photography is photography that captures invisible light. Yes, there is light that the human eye can not detect. IR photography can be used in scientific and investigative pursuits but has begun to gain popularity in mainstream circles for it surreal looks. Any foliage, leaves and grass, generally will be turned white as leaves and grass have a natural ability to deflect infrared light.

Rob, I think it's possible but cost prohibitive for the consumer. I think scientists and labs might have the ability to photograph Ultra Violet light.

I remember seeing a tv documentary where a scientist claimed that if he could stretch a roll of film from the east coast of America to the west and claim that if the film represented the full spectrum of light, the human eye can see just one frame of the reel. Shocked

    Nice!
With the conversion, do you see IR image on the view-screen or are you perpetually suprised?

I imagine infrared allows you to capture night scenes easier doesn't it? (I'm thinking wildlife)
I think i would head for a hide in the forest at night and look for some nocturnal critters. (Hint) Very Happy

When I look through the view finder I see normal visible color. Kind of makes sense if you think about it. A DSLR, and an SLR, the view finder is coming through the lens and bounced around the camera by mirrors. The infrared filter is on the camera's sensor itself which isn't connected to the viewfinder at all. It's just the image capturing part of the camera, like film in a film camera.

I'm actually thinking about buying a couple flashes and have them modified to emit infrared only so I can play around at night. Very Happy I will be busy now that I've tested out the camera.

I wasn't sure if the LCD screen showed IR image or not, I'd guessed the view-finder would be normal. Cool

Very Happy Oops... yes the LCD will show the infrared image. If I had camera with live view, I think it would be normal but I am only guessing. My 20D doesn't have live view but my 5D MK II does. I think it would be cool to have a full frame camera modified for infared, but that is something I'll have to save up for. lol!

I'm really wanting to get a decent camera. Mine is so limiting and the results unsatisfying. Sad

Jeff, do ya know anyone with a fish tank? I'd be interested to see infrared images of fish and coral.

Unfortunately I don't. I have a friend that I got a fish tank from but it's empty and just begging me to fill it with water to shoot some bubbles. I'll see if I can sneak the camera into the pet store. Now you've got me a bit curious. lol Twisted Evil

Careful mate, walking into a store is how I caught the bug. Now I'm addicted. I can't resist the beauty of corals and fish to the serious detriment of my finances.

Well worth it though. Very Happy

In regards to fishes and stuff, I must admit it helps me say no since I don't know a thing about them. I know there's fresh water fishies and salt water fishies and that is about it.

I have a 16 gallon tank that the wife brought home from a co-workewr at her office. I have since bought a bubble wand and diffuser to control the flow of bubbles with the intent to take macro shots of the bubbles. I just have to get around to really cleaning the tank. I wonder what water looks like in infrared? lol Yup, I am sick. Very Happy
