I've been threatening to take the plunge for a long time but I couldn't really justify spending on a DSLR.

Today I neglected to ask myself for justification and bought a Canon EOS 550D.

    Hopefully it'll arrive mid week.

I guess I'll have to live with the guilt. Very Happy

Resistance is futile! You will be assimilated! Very Happy

the 550D is a good camera and shouldn't have cost you too much, unless of course you didn't have the money in the first place. Wink

I look forward to see what images you show us. I think you'll have fun with that camera.

That's always my problem... no money. Sad

    Camera arrived this morning.
It came with a 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS lens kit.
I also picked up a set of 4 macro lense rings so hopefully I'll be able to get some tight pictures of fish and corals.

Battery now charged but I can't shoot anything until my memory card arrives. (seperate purchase)

... actually I might nip into town and buy another, having a spare won't hurt. Very Happy

I took 243 test photographs of my aquarium this evening using a variety of settings and every single exposure has come out too blue.
So many settings combinations, so few brain cells.

After a short break I discovered the auto white balance and improved things no end. ;D

I think I may fall asleep with the manual resting blissfully upon my chest tonight. Sleep

Auto White Balance is good for some things but if you have two different types of lighting going on at the same time, say tungsten and daylight, it's best to try and set a custom white balance.

Oh, since money may be short, I highly recomend a free program called Gimp. It's similar to photoshop but free!

I'm up to page 100 of the manual Smile
Creating a custom anything has not been covered yet, sounds complicated but i'm sure it aint.

I have a blue and a white tube light illuminating the tank. I can tilt them to give a semblence of dusk... which also alters the reflected colours of the fish before they settle down for the night, (fish also have night colours, they turn pale and some become mottled or even show stripes that are not visible during the day).

I must admit, i'm loving the 550D so far. Very Happy

    Congratulations on your new camera!

I am back to using a Sony Mavica P&S. It takes good pics for what it is. I don't know when I'll be able to replace my DSLR.

The pics you have on FB look very good, so apparently you're learning fast.

There should be a way to set a custom white balance, unless that particular model doesn't allow it and I would think that strange of Canon to do that.

Getting a custom white balance isn't complicated, just a bit of a pain but if I can do it, anyone can. It's basically just taking a picture of an 18% gray card in the lighting you wish to take pictures in. Then telling the camera to set the white balance off that image of the grey card.
